A 48-year-old man, Joel Muthike, at Rwathia village in Karumandi ward, Kirinyaga county of Kenya, has set his house on fire, dug his own grave and committed suicide.
Eyewitnesses said the man set his semi-permanent house on fire and used a panga (machete), to thwart any effort by the members of the public to try and put out the fire.
It was gathered that after he had razed his own house, Muthike turned his rage to his livestock.
“I have never seen anything like it, he chased us away when we tried to put out the fire,” a villager added.
He was said to have used a rope he had been using to tether his goat, to commit suicide.
His body was discovered dangling from a tree within his farm.
“I am deeply shocked because I have never seen him fuming with such kind of rage,” a resident of the community said.
Elias Murimi, brother of the deceased, disclosed that the family will bury his remains in the grave he had begun to dig.
“We have no other option but to bury my brother in the grave that he was digging.”
Antony Mbogo, Kirinyaga East Police Commander, confirmed the incident.
He said the police have launched an investigation to establish the cause of the incident.
Mbogo, who noted that Muthike did not leave behind a suicide note, added that the deceased was living alone since his wife died some years ago.
“He has a family but his wife had passed on,” the police chied added.
