Nigerians on Twitter have attacked Dino Melaye, a former Senator, over his comment on the country’s inability to produce a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Senator on his Twitter account on Tuesday queried why the government should spend N400 billion to procure COVID-19 vaccine when the country has institutions with trained scientists who can produce them for less.

He described the move as “shameful and a total disgrace”.

He said, “It’s sad, shameful and a total disgrace. Why can’t the largest Black country with over 150 universities and thousands of core scientists develop it’s own vaccine? Why use 400 billion Naira to import vaccine when our professors need less than 50 billion to deliver!!!.”

The tweet has, however, received numerous reactions from some Nigerians castigating the former Senator for such statement.

@mahony2t said, “We should ask you the role you played in funding the educational system during your time at the Senate. Everyone loves to play the blame game and acquire wealth to himself. If you want to make a change, finance a research at the University of your choice. That’s what leaders do.”

@LuqmanOgunyemi said, “The politicians are like the footballers, they don’t see most of their mistakes while on the pitch… Nigerian politicians will never see the problem to attend to while in authority, they only see it and complain after leaving office.”

@Onyiuke_2 said, “It is all shades of wrong both from Dino and FG. On Dino Part he is kicking against purchase of vaccine because he has the money & may have taken the jab in UAE. While FG choose to kill our institution by underfunding or strike but choose to loot everything loot-able.”

@AdamuDanja1 said, “U can effort ur contribution to such things that u have been mentioned since u are in politics now. We need people who are looking for the feature of our nation to contribute and use with his power and money to build what government didn’t build, and to offer our youths with job.”

@omereaga said, “You’re just making noise as if you don’t know how you people behave. Even if you are a sitting senator now, you can’t say Una Spoil The Country,The Day Of Reckoning Is Coming.”

@JohnAnyanwu13 said, “Distinguished senator sir, with due respect, how many bills, proposals did you put forward in this regard, how many forum, meetings or seminar did you organize regarding this. I ask because when an ordinary citizen complains & and u claim to be complaining, that is hypocrisy!.”

@MARYARI_9 said, “You are in politics baba call the right people and channel your complain.. like sey unah no dey enjoy d money together.”

@Asherwhyte said, “Sir thank you very much but with due respect if the vaccine has an inscription”made in Nigeria”you will not look at it nor even buying it…pls let’s not pretend to be outside the league when we know we are actually playing the game.”
