Mixed reactions have trailed the presumed ambition by Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to contest the 2023 presidential election.
Various groups, prominently the South-West Agenda For Asiwaju (SWAGA) group, have in recent months held campaign-style activities and called on Tinubu, a former two-tern Lagos State governor, to declare for the Presidency in 2023.
The calls for declaration has, however, been made even when the person in question is yet to officially declare his ambition for the position.
Reacting, Alhaji Isah Danladi, an APC chieftain, has rejected Tinubu as presidential candidate for the ruling party.
According to him, Tinubu is no better than President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Tinubu represents a recycling process that has left the country in ruins. He is no better than Buhari. In societies with conscience, his type should be concerned with leaving a good legacy as a statesman who contributes in stabilizing our democracy.
“Through wide consultations, he built a strong and virile party that was able to oust a running party from power. That should be his legacy not this infantile craze to grasp power which I think is self-serving,” he said.
Also speaking in the same vein of rejection, one of the APC leaders and a social commentator, Dr. Garus Golo, noted Tinubu is weak, insisting that the nation needs a healthy and strong leader.
“These people are jokers. You mean to say that a group of persons will gather themselves and in clear conscience seek to encourage an obviously weak and tired fellow to run for the presidency.
“Haba! Are we that unserious in this country? This is a man that just returned from the sickbed. And he is still nursing whatever ailment befell him,” he said.
But Hon. James Faleke, the lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency of Lagos State in the House of Representatives, vouched for Tinubu.
According to Faleke, the former Lagos State governor is a leader who can take the country to the next level, adding that he is a politician with a difference.
“On behalf of the millions of supporters of Tinubu Support Group, we are calling on our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to formally announce his presidential aspiration,” the lawmaker said.
