Non-teaching staff under the aegis of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, the Senior Staff Association of Teaching Hospitals, and Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions have declared on indefinitely strike. The leaders of the aggrieved unions rose from a meeting where the decision was taken. They said their decision followed the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum they gave to the Federal Government to implement several agreements earlier reached with it on new salaries structures, unpaid earned allowances and a review of retirement age for members.
Peters Adeyemi, the general secretary of NASU, said agreements between the government and the unions have not been kept for the past five years. Among the unions’ demands are non-payment of 12 months salaries arrears, unpaid earned allowances as well as the implementation of the new retirement age of 65 for its members.
