Bashir Agunloye of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Sports Commission has said that the state’s contingent to the fourth edition of the National Youth Games, NYG, Ilorin 2018, will do the state proud.
The 2018 National Youth Games will run from September 7th to 17th inside the University of Ilorin Sports Complex, Kwara State.
In a chat with Newsbreak.ng, Agunloye said although the state will be making its debut at the games, the athletes do not need special preparation due to the numerous developmental events that goes on in the state.
“I can confidently say our athletes (Lagos) are ready to do the state proud,” Agunloye said.
“Though we will be participating in the competition for the very first time, but it is not a problem for us because our athletes have always been engaged in developmental sporting programmes.
“Unlike other states who will be going into special preparation, we are always prepared and we are sure of doing very well at the games.”
Agunloye went on to reveal that so far, Lagos State have qualified for five team sports event following their participation at the South-West Zonal elimination held in Ogun a few days back.
“For now, Lagos State have qualified for five team events which are: handball for boys and girls, basket for girls, football for boys and beach volleyball for girls. Apart from this team sports events, Lagos State will also participate in individual sports like gymnastic, taekwondo and others.”
And on the number of athletes that will represent the state, Agunloye said it has not been decided.
