The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released its 2020 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results.

Godswill Obioma, registrar of the council, announced this while speaking on Wednesday at the examination body’s headquarters in Minna, the Niger State capital.

A total of 1,221,447 candidates registered for the examination, out of which 665,830 were male and 555,617 female.

According to Obioma, 1,102,041 candidates out of the 1,209,992 that sat for the examination passed with credits and above, while 894,101 candidates had credit and above in English and Mathematics.

The registrar noted that 33,470 cases of malpractices were recorded during the examination, as 12 schools and 24 supervisors were found to have been involved.

He also stated that the offenses range from poor supervision to aiding and conniving with non-candidates to provide answers.

“The Council has a long standing tradition for zero tolerance for malpractices. Thus, it can be noticed that the malpractices incidence in 2020 dropped compared to the figure of 2019,” Obioma said.

According to him, arrangements have been made for candidates who missed some of the exams as a result of the nationwide #EndSARS protests in October last year, to write their papers.

Some of the states affected include: Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Edo, Ondo, and some centres in Rivers, Abia, Enugu and the Federa Capital Territory (FCT).

“It is rather unfortunate to note that barely two weeks into the commencement of the Examinations, the ENDSARS protests erupted across some states in the country leading to the imposition of curfew and closure of schools by some State Governments in order to safeguard lives and property, thus truncating the process of examinations once more,” Obioma said.

“For security of personnel and materials, the examinations were suspended nationwide pending when normalcy returned. On return of normalcy, the examinations that were initially scheduled to end on Wednesday, 18th November, 2020 continued till 28th of November, 2020.

“We wish to inform the general public that the Council has made special arrangements for those candidates who missed some papers due to the ENDSARS Protests in those States. The affected candidates will now sit for those papers missed during the forthcoming 2020 SSCE (External) scheduled from Monday 1st February, 2021 to Wednesday 3rd March, 2021.”
