Ex-aide to former president, Reno Omokri, has defended the Godwin Emefiele-led Central Bank of Nigeria after the apex bank received a series of backlash from Nigerians as it unveiled the redesigned higher denominations of the country’s currency.
In a Tweet on Wednesday, Omokri defended the apex bank, saying the naira was redesigned for economic and security reasons more than beauty.
He also claimed that the apex bank has achieved its stated purpose with the new naira notes presented today.
“The Naira was not redesigned for beauty. It was redesigned for economic and security reasons. And it achieved exactly that. Naira appreciated. Bandits were flummoxed. The dollar is powerful, but not beautiful. Emefiele and the CBN board deserve kudos, not hubris!” Omokri wrote.
Many Nigerians were disappointed on Wednesday when President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled samples of the new naira notes.
Nigerians expected big changes, but the CBN just tweaked the color of the currency, which many Nigerians saw as a needless alteration.
