Newcastle United fought from one goal down to draw against Manchester City at St. James Park. Sergio Aguero had scored for City in the 14th minute to put them ahead before Vurnon Anita drew level for the hosts in the 31st minute. Aguero scored his 100th Premier League goal in 147 games for City to force Newcastle to remain in the relegation zone.
Manuel Pellegrini welcomed captain Vincent Kompany back for the clash. City had won a dozen Premier League games in a row against Newcastle, but – perhaps with one eye on next week’s meeting with Real Madrid – could not rouse themselves to extend that run to 13, and had Hart to thank for their draw when he denied Wijnaldum late on.
Newcastle remain 19th and two points adrift of safety, but they will be happy with their performance ahead of Rafael Benitez’s return to Anfield to face former club Liverpool at the weekend.
