The Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation Seyi Akinwunmi gave the Flying Eagles a cash gift of N5 million to avert the team’s planned strike. The players and officials of the team had planned to strike ahead of their Saturday game against Sudan, the reverse tie of their 2-1 win in Omdurman two weeks ago. The players had not been paid camping and travel allowances as well as match bonuses since they started their qualifiers for next year’s Africa Youth Championship.
Akinwunmi’s gift has calmed the layers as have they have now returned to training for their Saturday match in Lagos. The team coach Emmanuel Amuneke thanked the NFF Vice President. He, however, called on the football body to treat the issue of players’ welfare with more seriousness as it could lead to an embarrassment for the nation if not checked.
There are still reports circulating that the coach and his backroom staff are yet to be paid any form of salary since they were officially appointed eight months ago.
