In today’s world where people and organisations are catching up on the value-added operations of internet to do businesses and project their activities to the world, the Habu Gumel-led Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) is far behind.
Newsbreak’s check on the official website of the NOC, www.nigerianoc.org Thursday evening shows that the organization is operating with a moribund website, that has not been functioning in the last three years.
The last news item titled IOC SIGNS ALLIANZ AS OLYMPIC SPONSOR on the website was posted on 18 September, 2018.
Sports pundits in the country find this appalling that Nigeria which is seen as the ‘Giant of Africa’ could descend so low in not meeting up with standard expected of an organization of international status like the NOC.
A check on what is happening in some countries in West Africa sub region revealed that some of the countries are far above Nigeria in term of standard of operations.
The Ghana Olympic Committee has its website functioning and updated with current news especially the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics with exciting photos to tell the story of Ghana’s participation in the Summer Games.
The last news article on the website (www.ghanaolympic.org) was posted on 4 August, 2021 titled “Tokyo 2020: Nana Akufo-Addo Applauds Samuel Takyi For Winning Bronze Medal At Olympic Games”, while the neighbouring Benin Republic’s Comité National Olympique et Sportif Béninoi (www. /olympics.com/ioc/benin) has its website updated as at Thursday, 5 August, 2021.
“It is rather so unfortunate that Nigeria is just big for nothing. I am very sure that there would be budget for the media department of the NOC which some people will be sitting on. The Olympics is ongoing, nothing of such on the website of our NOC. This is bad,” said Wole Ayanwale, who told Newsbreak that he has knew of the Gumel in the NOC for a very long time.
Gumel has been part of the NOC since 1997.
“I wonder what kind of sports administrators we have in Nigeria. It is no wonder 10 of our athletes were penalized for failing drug tests at the Tokyo 2020. When administrators are not doing what they suppose to do, we will seeing be all these problems. Putting up good information dissemination channel is still difficult for our NOC,” said Esther Oriloye, a table tennis pundit in Lagos.
