Dr Gambo Aliyu, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has said that 29 out of 30 patients of Dr Jeremiah Abalaka, a Nigerian who claimed to have the cure for HIV, died of complications after treatment.
He said the death of the patients made it impossible for the Federal Government to collaborate with him.

Abalaka had for many years claimed he could cure HIV, saying the western world was benefiting from the production of Anti-Retroviral drugs hence its reluctance to finding a permanent cure. He claimed to have infected himself with HIV 20 years and cured himself. His model, as explained by him, was to extract the patient’s blood and put it back within two hours.
However, Aliyu said, “About 30 patients were treated by Abalaka. Today, only one is alive; 29 died of complications that followed. Is that not enough?”
He said Nigeria still accounts for a large number of new infections, adding that less than 40 per cent of Nigerian youths have a proper understanding of the disease.

Aliyu noted that Nigeria’s domestic funding for HIV was estimated to be below 30 per cent, adding that efforts of communities were urgently needed to ensure that HIV remain on the political agenda and galvanise international and national funding for HIV.
Abdulkadir Ibrahim, the National Coordinator, Network of People living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, said that 1.9 million people in Nigeria had the disease but argued that only about half of those affected had access to treatment.
