Poju Oyemade, the senior pastor of Covenant Christian Centre and convener of the yearly social-political summit, The Platform, has also lent his voice to the on-going #EndSARS protests.
In a series of tweets on Thursday, the clergy while sharing his personal encounter with members of the now defunct police tactical unit, said what saved the day was personal recognition.
He recounted how his wife had been arrested by a SARS team and that when he got to the police station, the excuse for his wife’s arrest was flimsy.
“Sometime last year I got a call from my wife that she had been arrested and taken to the police station. I was heading for a service somewhere when I had to rush to where she was. I found what the officer said quite flimsy and to date don’t understand it,” he said.
Empathising with young Nigerians who don’t have the social influence he wields, Pastor Oyemade implored the government to take definite steps to show commitment to the promises made to the protesting youths.
“At the heart of this is that this generation is tired of being led this way. Those in leadership must know that this generation requires a more accountable system of leadership which are more consistent with the ideals of a democratic government.
“Even smaller nations are beginning to leap from over Nigeria in development and progress by providing basic infrastructure and amenities with a more accountable form of leadership”
