Bruce Fein, the American counsel for the detained leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has alleged that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court (FHC) sitting in Abuja, faked her illness to postpone a bail hearing and trial scheduled for Thursday for another month.
Newsbreak reports that Fein who insisted that his client is innocent of the charges levelled against him by the Federal Government, also said Kanu’s continued detention is “a crime against humanity”.
Kanu was scheduled to resume his trial yesterday before Justice Nyako. But court officials informed parties to the case that the court had vacated the May 26 date and rescheduled proceedings for June 28, 2022. IPOB’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, disclosed in a statement that the adjournment was the result of Justice Nyako being indisposed.
“The curtain must fall on the farcial prosecution of MNK by Nigeria,” Fein wrote on his known Twitter handle on Thursday.
“Justice Nyako’s faux indisposition to postpone a bail hearing and trial scheduled today for another month conclusively proves MNK’s innocence. His continued punishment without trial is a crime against humanity.”
Kanu leads a pro-Biafra group, agitating for a referendum which they said will lead to the disintegration of Nigeria and realisation of a Biafra Republic.
