He was making this revelation during an event on diabetes in Abeokuta, Ogun State, southwest Nigeria on Wednesday where young diabetes patients had a programme to tell the world that it is not a killer disease.
The ex-president was at the event to share his experience as a diabetes patient, he said: “I have been having diabetes for the past 35 years now and I am still here, nothing has happened to me. I am hale and healthy. I can tell you that I am still doing many things that some people of my age cannot do. Some of my friends have died of this disease.
“The reason for their deaths was that they failed to manage the disease very well. It does not matter whether it is Type 1 or 2. So far no cure has been found for diabetes, hopefully, we will get one someday I wish it could be possible for the world to get this cure before before I die.
“What I know is that diabetes patient must watch what he or she is eating, You must completely stay away from sugar, watch the number of carbohydrate you are taking, don’t miss your drugs and don’t also your insulin injection. These are very important.
“I used to carry my drugs anywhere I am going and I always check my blood sugar level,” Obasanjo said.
The former president also advised that although no cure for diabetes for now, it can still be managed very well
