Raila Odinga, the main opposition candidate in Kenya’s presidential election on Tuesday, rejected the results of the August 9 presidential election, which gave Deputy President William Ruto victory.
Rejecting the election result while addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Odinga said the result announcement made by the country’s electoral body was a travesty and a blatant disregard for Kenya’s constitution.
“What we saw yesterday (Monday) was a travesty and a blatant disregard for Kenya’s constitution,” Odinga said at a press conference on Tuesday, a day after the results were declared by Kenya’s electoral body, in which Ruto was declared the winner, according to Agence France-Presse.
Deputy President William Ruto was proclaimed the victor of Kenya’s closely contested presidential election, according to Newsbreak.ng’s report from Monday.
Ruto received about 7.18 million votes (50.49%) in the August 9 election, compared to Odinga’s 6.94 million (488.55%) votes cast, according to the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Wafula Chebukati.
However, several media reports have detailed that some commissioners of the electoral body rejected the result announced by the country’s election umpire.
Political disputes have often accompanied Kenyan elections, with opposition frequently challenging the outcome of the country’s presidential election.
