While Team Nigeria were recording first victory in any sport in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan on Saturday through Edem Offiong in the women singles of the table tennis event, the nation is also recording a loss through another ping ponger, Olajide Omotayo in the men’s singles event.
Offiong defeated her Hungarian opponent, Dora Madarasz 4-1 (11-8,11-9,11-9,9-11,11-4) in their round one match.
The Cross River State-born table tennis player is featuring in her 4th Olympics, where she is aiming to break the all-time Olympic appearance record for a Nigerian at this rate.
Debutant Omotayo on the hand was overpowered by Portuguese player, Tiago Apolonia in a one-sided game that ended 4-0 (11-7,11-9,11-6,4-5).
Earlier in the day, 45-year-old Funke Oshonaike lost 1-4 to Juan Liu of the U.S in the women’s table tennis singles.
Oshonaike, who has represented Nigeria at seven Olympic Games, failed to come to the party losing the first three sets to her opponent.
She lost the first set 7-11, the second 3-11 and the third 4-11, before winning the fourth set 13-11 and then losing the fifth 4-11 to crash out of the Games
