Nigeria’s Divine Oduduru has ended his individual events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after he failed to qualify for the final of the men’s 200 metres final on Tuesday.
Oduduru ran 20:16 seconds from lane seven to finish third in the first semi-final of the 200 metres.
He appeared to have been in the lead just before the curve but lost steam at the final 50 metres.
Having finished in the third position, the Nigerian was hoping to qualify as one of the next two fastest sprinters in the three semi-finals.
However, his time was too slow as the athletes who finished in the third position in semi-finals two and three both ran sub-20 seconds in their races, effectively ending his dream for a chance to sprint among the world best in the final.
The Nigerian, ranked no 23 in the world at the 200 metres distance, had earlier in the day finished second in the first heat of round one in a time of 20.36 seconds.
