The dream of Grace Nwokocha to clinch a medal for Nigeria in the women’s 200 metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics got dashed on Monday as she failed to finish in the top two positions in the semi-final.
Nwokocha finished in the fourth position in the third semi-final of the 200 metres in a time of 22:47 seconds.
However, her position placement meant that she could not advance to the final of the sprint event despite equalling her personal best time in the distance.
She had earlier in the day ran the same 22:47 seconds to finish third in heat 1 of the event to gain one of the automatic tickets to the semi-finals.
The 20-year-old Nwokocha had reached the semi-finals of the women’s 100m event, where she placed fifth in semi-final 3 in 11.07 on Sunday.
The time and her placement were, however, not enough to help her secure a spot in the final, which was won by Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica.
