The alleged planned defection of seven legislators belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party in the Ondo House of Assembly may deepen the woe of the party still smarting from its recent poll defeat. According to Tribune, the seven members might defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as soon as the assembly reconvenes from its break. Currently, the assembly is composed of 14 PDP members and 12 APC members, including recent defectors from the PDP.
However, Taofeek Abdulsalam, the Senior Special Adviser on Legislative Matter to the governor, allegedly confirmed only four PDP lawmakers had signified their intention to join the APC. But he was hopeful others will follow suit “before the end of May.”
“They will formally declare their defection to APC,” Abdulsalam said.
Moreover, the APC-led government appears the gainer regarding the defection, as it prepares to present a list of commissioner-nominees to the assembly for confirmation.
The PDP in Ondo has been in tatters since the failure of immediate past governor, Segun Mimiko, to install his preferred successor, Eyitayo Jegede.
Jegede was defeated in the poll by Rotimi Akeredolu, the incumbent governor.
