One person has been reportedly killed and four injured, after a fire incident, while inmates tried to escape at a prison in Kumasi, Ghana, security officials said Thursday.
Report has it shortly that, after the fire incident, prison officials tried to evacuate the inmates but, some inmates tried to escape.
An official said the fire was caused by lightning. “We had to open the inmates’ cells for their lives to be spared,” James Annan, Kumasi Prison spokesman, was quoted by AFP news agency.
Annan added that the inmates, hurled bricks, chairs and other objects at the police, to ensure that they escape.
Officers retaliated by firing tear gas and shot one inmate dead, when he tried to snatch a gun.
Kumasi-based journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor said that some inmates stole the clothes of prison officers and tried to escape by climbing a wall, but the reinforcements by the police, helped to calm the situation.
But Donkor, who was at the scene during the riot, said that two inmates were killed and five officers were wounded in the clashes.
None of the inmates was able to escape, while the situation has been put under control.
