There is palpable tension following the leakage of a gas pipeline in some parts of Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the affected areas: Computer village, Underbridge Awolowo way, Oba Akran axis, Anifowoshe and Medical road.
The aforementioned areas are densely populated areas as various businesses are domiciled with that axis.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted residents in the Ikeja area of Lagos State to avoid the area as the gas in the air can ignite anytime.
“Residents around Computer Village, Underbridge Awolowo Way, Oba Akran axis, Anifowose Street, Medical Road, must not open shops or use open naked fire for safety reasons,” Ibrahim Farinloye, NEMA South-West spokesperson, said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Distressed alert just received indicates massive leakage of gas pipeline around these areas. Residents are advised to take safety precautions to prevent any form of disaster.”
Farinloye, in another statement, stated the gas leakage has been brought under control.
However, security agencies and emergency officials have continued to divert traffic around the affected areas.
