Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson, Opposition Coalition (CUPP), has described the war against terrorism in Nigeria as a joke and political agenda, following the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to stand behind Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
Nigerians have been demanding the sack or resignation of Pantami, after documents and video footages indicted him of holding extremist views in the past and being part of an alleged plot to assassinate late Kaduna State governor, Patrick Yakowa.
But the Presidency, in a statement released by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, on Thursday, said the embattled minister made the comments when he was young.
He also said the “cancel campaign” against Pantami is being instigated by those seeking to remove him as minister.
Ugochinyere, in a statement on Facebook, said President Muhammadu Buhari is claiming to be fighting terrorism in the country, but is in romance with those who promote terrorist agenda.
“Buhari’s APC government War against Terrorism A Joke and Political propaganda with Communication Minister and Pro-Taliban and Terrorist agenda supporter, Isa Ali Pantami still in Office,” he said.
“A government that cannot sack a minister who has been exposed as an international terrorism sympathiser is a pro-terrorism regime. Are you sure the man has not handed over our sensitive bank data, Sim Card and National identification records to all the terrorist networks in the world?
“The refusal to sack him means the government likes people like him and the agenda he was pushing is what the government would have loved or really loves. Why claim to be fighting terrorism while in bed with those who promote terrorist agenda.
“If the government is not a terrorist regime, they should sack the man, arrest him and secure a valid court order to keep him in detention until they ascertain if our National Security has been compromised and find out if our National ID card and banking records are already in the hands of Terrorists.”
