A pastor, simply identified as Bassey, on Monday committed suicide in his residence on Abari Street in Mulero, Dopemu, Lagos. The incident happened on 25 January, 2016 around 5am. It is believed that the suicide is connected to an accusation levelled against him by his church members that he diverted church funds for personal use. The 49-year-old pator was said to have been depressed after the accusations and had become withdrawn. On the day he would slash his own throat, his wife said he had stayed in the balcony till 3am before she persuaded him to come to bed. Unknown to her, he had hidden a knife underneath the bed which he used to slash his throat around 5am on Monday night. He was said to have written a suicide note which sates,’I, Myself, not my wife’.
Neighbours, who expressed shock at the incident, described the deceased as a good and God-fearing man. They confirmed that he had been distraught after the allegations of theft by his church members. They dismissed any suspicions of a quarrel between the man and his wife saying they were both friendly and acted like friends. They said the deceased had assisted his wife with her hair the day before and they were often seen helping each other. They also said the woman and her son, Emmanuel, could not have been connected to his death saying theirs was a happy family.
The police said they were called to the scene and the body has been deposited in a morgue. They arrested the wife and the son and recovered the knife used in the suicide. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident and said the mater had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
