Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have summoned an emergency meeting following the fresh leadership crisis rocking the party following a recent court ruling.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by C.I.D Maduabum, Director-General of the PDP-GF, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the governors of the country’s main opposition party will meet in Abuja on Thursday in order to find solutions to resolve the lingering crisis.
The statement partly read: “The chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Rt Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, in consultation with his colleagues, have summoned an emergency meeting of the Forum to hold on Thursday, 26th August, 2021 at 5pm.
“The meeting will discuss recent developments in the PDP.
“The governors enjoined all PDP members and stakeholders to exercise patience, as efforts are being made to ensure continued stability of the party in the days ahead.”
A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday, restrained Uche Secondus from parading himself as the PDP National Chairman, following a suit filed by aggrieved members of the party.
Sequel to the ruling, two members of the party’s National Working Committee suddenly laid claim to the vacant seat and declared themselves as the PDP acting national chairmen.
The two Deputy National Chairmen of the party, Yemi Akinwonmi (South) and Senator Suleiman Nazif (North), in separate announcements on Tuesday, claimed to be the party’s acting National Chairman.
It was learnt that Akinwonmi is loyal to Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, who is reported to have instigated calls for the removal of Secondus as the PDP chairman, despite being instrumental in the latter’s emergence as honcho of the party.
Nazif, on the other hand, is said to have the support of the suspended chairman, Secondus.
The current development is, however, contradictory to the resolutions recently reached by the party to resolve its leadership crisis.
The party had earlier held an emergency meeting of its Board of Trustees and other stakeholders on 10 August following the resignation of some members of the NWC and increased calls for Secondus to resign his position as National Chairman.
At the end of the emergency meeting, Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto State and Chairman of the PDP’s Governor Forum, announced that Secondus will remain chairman of the party till October 2021 instead of December 2021.
This, as Governor Tambuwal explained, is because the party’s national convention scheduled for December has been brought forward to October.
