Doyin Okupe, former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as it’s presently constituted, will die except it reforms itself. Okupe posted the comment, and also his perception on the All Progressives Congress, APC, to his Facebook account, on Thursday.
Okupe said the PDP must totally “overhaul and reform itself, engage Nigerians in a new coalition for the sole purpose of putting our dear country on the true path, (and) to the true, real and the enduring change that will once and for all establish us as a major global player”.
He said the present crop PDP leaders are “pretenders” and unless a change occurs, the party ‘will die a painful and insidious death’.
Okupe said he was gladdened by the efforts to mobilise PDP members as led by the chairman, DAAR Communications, Raymond Dokpesi. He however differed that ‘mobilisation is not the immediate thing the Pdp needs now’. Okupe feared current revelations and others yet-to-come on the past PDP administration will further gravely damage the party.
“The credibility of the party as a veritable political alternative to the APC has been nearly irreparably damaged.
“Some of the recent disclosures and more that may come up from the impending probes will further damage the national acceptability of the party”, Okupe stated.
He also feared the APC may not be a veritable alternative to the PDP.
“At the end of the day the APC may not meet up the expectations of Nigerians or may in fact fail out rightly (sic) over time but the PDP as it is presently constituted will not be an acceptable alternative to majority of Nigerians now or in future”.
Okupe said the ruling APC and PDP have “no clear philosophy, no ideology or central motivating theme, no clear policy objectives. no true leadership, no defining party character or style, (but) only contestants, aspirants and office seekers.”
