After being found guilty of receiving more than N200 million in cash from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled Dr. Doyin Okupe guilty and sentenced him to two years in jail.
In her ruling on Monday, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu stated that Okupe’s behavior, who is the first defendant in the lawsuit brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), violated the Money Laundering Act. On counts 34 to 59 of the accusations, he was found guilty.
The Peter Obi Campaign Organization’s Director-General, Okupe, was given a two-year prison term on count 34 and the option of a N500,000 fine by the court.
On counts 35 to 59, the court additionally gave him a two-year prison term and a N500,000 option fine. The punishment runs simultaneously whereas the fine option runs in a straight line for each count. Beginning on the day the verdict is announced, the punishment will be executed.
Although the criminal is the property of the state, the court stated that it does not issue any custody orders.
