Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has returned to training after a four-year retirement due to leukemia. The Bulgarian was invited for training by new boss, Roberto Di Matteo. The 36-year-old had been training with the club’s under-21s after he showed interest in returning to football. He last featured for Villa in March 2012 and could earn himself a contract if he is able to show that he can hit top form again. He is training three times a day and tests earlier this year revealed his fitness levels are close to how he was performing before his enforced retirement.
Petrov joined from Celtic in 2006, signed by Martin O’Neill, and went on to make 186 league appearances. He was inducted to the Villa Hall of Fame three years ago. In addition he is Bulgaria’s all-time most-capped player with 105 appearances for the side.
