The Nigeria Police Force has on Saturday taken over the Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, the venue of the June 12 protest in Lagos State.
Various groups are scheduled to hold demonstrations on June 12 – designated as Democracy Day in Nigeria – to protest against the state of the nation and the governance of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state clearly that it is not aware of any planned protest in Lagos State to commemorate the 2021 Democracy Day on Saturday, 12th June, 2021,” Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said on Friday.
However, in photos that have surfaced online, an armoured personnel carrier (APC) of the police was seen at the Ojota park, while police vans were situated in strategic locations across the park.
