Nigeria will not be represented in the Group phase of this year’s CAF Champions League following NPFL Champions, Plateau United’s ouster on Sunday.
The Jos-based side, Nigeria’s last hope in the competition, defeated their opponent, Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia by a lone goal at the Sani Abacha Stadium, but crashed out 4-3 on aggregates. The first leg of the first round had finished 4-2 in Tunis last week.
Tosin Omoyele scored the only goal for the Kennedy Boboye’s team, but needed two goals to progress to the money-spinning group phase of the competition.
Recall the country’s other representative, MFM FC, were also on Saturday dumped out by MC Alger on 7-2 aggregate. Both teams, who have now dropped to the CAF Confederations Cup, will have to wait to know their opponents in the competition’s playoffs.
Meanwhile, Akwa United and Enyimba International have qualified to the next round of the Confederations Cup. Akwa defeated Al Ittihad 3-2 on penalties, courtesy of goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke, who saved three kicks. The two legs had ended 1-1.
Former CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba defeated Energie of Cotonou 5-2 on aggregate, to also book a place in the next round of the competition.
