The police have arrested over 105 suspects for the riots which halted commercial and social activities in the Mile 12 market on Thursday. The riot left over four people dead and several injured with property worth millions of naira destroyed.
The Lagos State Police Command spokeswoman, Dolapo Badmud said that the suspects will be charged with murder, arson and breach of public peace.
The riot was said to have started when an ‘okada’ rider hit a pregnant woman in the market and refused to take responsibility for the accident. Passers-by were said to have descended on him. Recovering from the beating he brought his colleagues to avenge his beating which led to an ethnic clash between the Hausas and Yorubas in the area. The incident led the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to order a curfew in four streets in the area and shutdown the market temporarily.
