The Cross River Police Command said it has arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of four of its officers on Thursday at a makeshift checkpoint in Ayan Mbat community along Idundu Road in Calabar Municipality.
The officers were said to be two inspectors and two sergeants.
They were killed by gunmen between 12 midnight and 1:00am.
Sikiru Akande, the state Commissioner of Police, who confirmed the incident, said detectives discovered, based on intelligence gathered, that the killing was carried out by a group of cultists who needed equipment for their initiation.
According to him, the police have started receiving some of the weapons stolen by the cult group.
He stated that the other suspects on the run will soon be apprehended.
He said, “We have gone to the scene to see what has happened. The attack was a means devised to dampen our spirit. Our spirit is not dampened.
“We have arrested five suspects. More will be arrested. From intelligence gathered, a group of cultists want to get equipment for their initiation coming up soon. In the next few days, we will get all of them.
“We have started recovering some of the weapons they snatched, thereby reducing the threat they would have posed. We have already started striking back.”
The policemen were taken unawares during the attack as prolonged gunshots were heard by residents in the area, who woke up in the morning to see corpses of the slain officers
