Police have arrested a 36-year-old man, Daniel Obasi, for hacking the Facebook accounts of the Ondo and Lagos Deputy Governors, Lasisi Oluboyo and Oluranti Idiat Adebule respectively, and using it to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. The man, who hails from Imo state but resides in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, said he was a cosmetic products seller before he ventured into cyber crimes. He said that, contrary to reports that he hacked the accounts, he only created new accounts bearing their names. He confessed to collecting a lot of money from unsuspecting people. He also said he would initiate chats with different individuals asking them to pay money into a bank account to finance projects in the deputy governors’ offices.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mike Ogbodu, insisted he hacked the accounts using a special kind of software. He said that the suspect had been using various accounts of deputy governors to swindle prominent Nigerians. He said the suspect had made a confessional statement and that detectives are on the trail of a similar fraudster.
