A police officer, Salawu Kazeem, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating a 21-year-old carpenter, Ganiyu Akinyemi, to death. The officer, who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police, was said to have gone to the deceased’s house with four other men to arrest him on Monday for allegedly stealing t-shirts from his house, where he had worked. Kazeem, attached to the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun State, had told the deceased’s family that he was taking him to the Oke-Odo Police Station. The deceased father, Ibrahim Akinyemi, said the officer had shown him his identity card making him agree to the arrest. He said suspicion arose when one of his sons came home to say he was not taken to the station as earlier agreed. The aggrieved father said he got a call around 3am informing him that his son was at the Oke Odo General Hospital with knee, hands and head injuries. He said it was later discovered that the officer had taken Ganiyu to his house and tortured him till he lost consciousness. The deceased’s sister, Saidat Ibrahim, said Ganiyu had told her that the shirts were given to him after he had completed the work.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, confirmed the ASP’s arrest, adding that the case would be transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, for further investigation. He said two others were on the run.
