A North Carolina police officer, D.C. Twiddy, 29, on Monday has killed a man, Akiel Denkins, who was fleeing arrest from a drug offense. A local TV station reported that the incident was said to have sparked protest, with residents chanting “black lives matter.”
The victim’s mother, Rolanda Byrd told local television the officer was white and her son was shot in the back as he ran away.
Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown told reporters that the suspect was shot near a convenience store just after 12 p.m. A gun was found near the body. She said the officer has been placed on administrative duty per department policy.
