The Kogi State police command has arrested an officer and his colleagues attached to Adogo Division over an assault on a passenger and alleged extortion, while on patrol duty along Adogo-Okene road in the state.
In a viral video, one of the officers was seen slapping a passenger travelling in a commercial vehicle.
The man who filmed the incident said police officers stopped the bus to carry out a search.
According to him, the police personnel found a laptop belonging to a student on the bus.
He said the student explained that he uses the laptop for assignment, but the officers did not believe him and demanded N25,000 bribe.
The man claimed that the officers took the student to a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator, where they made him withdraw N25, 000 and handed it over to them, after they rejected cash transfer.
He further narrated that when one of the passengers frowned at one of the officers for corking his gun, the said officer got angry and slapped the man.
The officer reportedly threatened that blood will flow if they (passengers) do not behave.
In an earlier reaction, Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), stated that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered an investigation into the matter.
In a statement released shortly afterwards on Sunday, DSP William Ovye Aya, spokesperson of the Kogi command, noted that the officer who assaulted the passenger and others on patrol from the division during the incident, have been arrested and investigation has begun.
Aya identified the officers as “ASP Isah Barnabas, Inspector Ifediegwu Godwin, Sgt Emmanuel Ochima and CPL Umameh Mathias”.
