On Wednesday, Pope Francis offered prayers for those who have been affected by the terrible flooding that has devastated the majority of Nigeria.
A large portion of Nigeria’s farmland, infrastructure, and homes have been completely or partially destroyed due to the country’s worst flooding in ten years.
Expressing concern at the country’s current predicament Pope Francis who heads the catholic church lamented that violent rain has in recent times fallen in Nigeria causing flooding, numerous death, and tremendous damage.
“I think of the violent rains that have fallen on their country [Nigeria] in these days, causing flooding, numerous deaths, and tremendous damage,” Pope Francis said.
“Let us #PrayTogether for all those who have lost their lives due to the violent flooding that has hit #Nigeria, and for all those affected by this devastating calamity. May our solidarity, and the support of the international community, not be lacking,” he added.
According to the country’s humanitarian affairs department, the worst floods Nigeria has seen in more than ten years have resulted in more than 600 fatalities and 1.3 million displaced people.
Numerous roads, significant tracts of farmland, and thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed. Extreme rainfall and the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, which is close to Nigeria, were the main causes of the widespread flooding.
