Manchester City’s hopes of defending their Premier League title were dealt another blow on Saturday when Jonjo Shelvey’s stunning late equaliser helped Newcastle United secure a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.
City began on the front foot after David Silva’s deft backheel found Raheem Sterling, who curled in the ball in the 22nd minute for his 15th goal this season.
The Magpies, however, provided a swift response in the 25th minute through full-back Jetro Willems, who received a square pass from Miguel Almiron before calmly slotting past City’s Ederson.
City’s Gabriel Jesus and De Bruyne were thwarted by Martin Dubravka after the break before substitute Bernardo Silva pulled a shot wide from eight yards.
However, De Brunye finally got on the scoresheet in the 82nd minute after a brilliant long-range effort which went in off the crossbar.
But with two minutes of normal time remaining substitute Christian Atsu pulled the ball back for his team-mate Shelvey, who beat the dive of Ederson with his strike.
That is now 13 points dropped by Pep Guardiola’s side who are eight points behind the league leaders, Liverpool.
