President of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, has declared the country an Islamic country. He said the stand was taken because 95% of the 1.8 million population were muslims and the country wanted to break free from its colonial past. Jammeh stated that people of other faiths would still be allowed to practise. He had, in November, announced that female genital mutilation would be outlawed after much pressure from the international community. He withdrew the country from the commonwealth in 2013 and in 2007, he claimed he had discovered a herbal cure for AIDS.
