Saudi Arabia, the group C underdog has stunned South American giant Argentina in the group’s opener at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Saudi Arabia trailed Argentina 1-0 in the first half but rallied in the second half to claim a shocking 2-1 victory over one of the favorites to win the prestigious football trophy.
The Argentine side believed to be the favorite to win the group C opener took the lead in the first half with a penalty kick from PSG star, Lionel Messi.
However, two goals in five minutes at the opening of the second half for a team that bettors were giving odds of 500-1 to win the World Cup before the competition started turned the game on its head.
Prior to the referee blowing the final whistle for full-time and inciting wild celebrations among their players and thousands of fans inside the stadium, Saudi had to hold out for almost 14 minutes of additional time.
The devastating defeat ends the South American 36-game winning streak. Additionally, it also dents Lionel Messi’s hopes of winning the World Cup, the only trophy he hasn’t had the chance to win during his stellar career as a football player.
