Morocco has defeated Spain on penalties to go to the 2022 World Cup quarter finals in Qatar, where they will face either Portugal or Switzerland.
For the first time ever, Achraf Hakimi’s game-winning penalty sent Morocco into the round of eight of a World Cup.
The game extended into penalty shootout after 120 minutes of play without a goal.
The teams were evenly matched throughout the nail-biting contest, with Spain holding the majority of the possession while Morocco, despite having lesser opportunities, created the better openings.
After the team’s shocking loss to Japan, Spain coach Luis Enrique tried out Marcos Llorente, his third right-back of the competition.
Morocco, the remaining African team in the first World Cup ever held in an Arab nation, received a lot of support from their fans.
