Some residents of Ola-Oti Compound, at the Kankatu area of Ilorin, in Kwara state, have been rendered home after a fire destroyed at least 25 rooms and 12 shops. The incident happened on Monday. NAN reported an eye witness as saying the blaze began around 2 a.m. and lasted over four hours; destroyed valuables worth millions of naira.
The cause of the fire has not been known.
A victim, Kale Yero, said a tanker driver who passed through the road in the midnight sighted the fire and alerted the residents of the area.
The fire service was called in and they battled the blaze for hours.
The Head of Fire Prevention at the state Fire Service, AbdulWaheed Yakub, put down the cause of the fire to an electrical fault. Also, he said the fire was fuelled by combustible materials stored in the affected buildings and shops.
