Bola Tinubu, an influential leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is reputed to have played a role in The Gambian political debacle. According to the Nation, disgraced former leader of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, was ferried in Tinubu’s VP-CBT Falcon Jet, first to Equitorial Guinea, and later to Malabo.
Jammeh was pressured into handing over power to his rival, Adama Barrow, who won a presidential vote that terminated Jammeh’s 22-year rule in the tiny West African country.
Guinean President Alpha Conde, a close friend of Tinubu, alongside Mauritanian President Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz, pulled off a last-minute negotiation that spurred Jammeh’s decision to quit power and fly into exile.
“He (Tinubu) reportedly gave a condition: it should only be used ‘if it will facilitate the quick exit of Jammeh and lead to the restoration of peace and democracy in The Gambia’, the Nation reported.
The plane eventually flew out with Jammeh, his wife, mother and President Conde on board.
