A six-man robbery gang has snatched two AK-47 rifles attached to some policemen and burnt their patrol vehicle.
The robbers reportedly stabbed three policemen in the process. The incident happened at two checkpoints along the Enugu-Nsukka Road by Uwguojo Nike on Tuesday.
The policemen had set up checkpoints to enforce the lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic. The first attack took place at Ekwegbe, where an inspector was stabbed in the chest. When the robbers, clad in black and operating with a tricycle, reached the Enugu-Nsukka Road, they attacked two policemen of the Federal Safer Highway with daggers and dispossessed them of their rifles.
The other two members of the team were attacked while they were asleep before setting their patrol van on fire.
The Punch reports that Sam Agbons, Officer-in-Charge of the Federal Safer Highway in Enugu State, confirmed the attack.
