Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has again demonstrated his keen interest in the development of youth in Lagos State, as the Lagos State Government supported the Olympic bound athletes,both the foreign Based and home based Lagos athletes with cash awards to support them in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics holding in Japan next month.
Announcing the cash support at a ceremony held at Lagos State House, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu presented cheques of N146,000,000(One Hundred and Forty-Six Million Naira to the Chairman Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku as Lagos State support for Olympic bound Lagos athletes and reward for Team Lagos medalists at the last National Sports Festival tagged “Edo 2020 held in Benin, Edo State, last April.
Two Olympic bound foreign based athletes were supported with the sum of N5,000,000(Five Million Naira) each, while four home based Lagos athletes ,Hammed Koleosho, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, Godwin Olofua and Adijat Olarinoye were supported with the sum of N2,500,000 (Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira) each.
Governor Sanwo-Olu rewarded the Team Lagos medalists at the 20th National Sports Festival with gold medalists in individual sports receiving N750,000 (Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) each , silver medalists given N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) each, all bronze medalists are to collect N350,000(Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira)each.
Team sports medalists were rewarded with gold medalists coasting home with N2,000,000(Two Million Naira), silver medalists rewarded with N1,750,000 (One Million Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira, while bronze medalists were awarded N1,500,000(One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira).
While presenting cheques to the Lagos athletes, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged them not to rest on their oars in excelling and achieving greater heights in the Tokyo Olympics next month.
The Governor also announced the donation of a 3-bedroom flat at the Babatunde Fashola Housing Estate,Iponri to the first and only individual Olympic Gold Medalist in Nigeria Ajuwa.
While announcing the house reward,the Governor informed that the donation was to fulfill the 25 years pledge made by the then government of Lagos State which has been left unfulfilled.
Speaking when presenting the Team Lagos Olympics bound athletes to the Governor, the Chairman Lagos State Sports Commission Sola Aiyepeku particularly mentioned Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasis on female participation and inclusiveness in sports and that according to him tell the story.
It could be recalled that Team Lagos won a total of 125 medals at the last National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020 in April.
