Newsbreak.ng had reported how Saudi Arabia, the group C underdog stunned South American giants, Argentina, in the group’s opener at the 2022 FIFA world cup at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.
Saudi Arabia trailed Argentina 1-0 in the first half but rallied in the second half to claim a shocking 2-1 victory over one of the favorites to win the prestigious football trophy.
The Argentine side believed to be the favourites to win the group C opener took the lead in the first half with a penalty kick from PSG star, Lionel Messi.
However, two goals in five minutes at the opening of the second half for a team that bettors were giving odds of 500-1 to win the World Cup before the competition started turned the game on its head.
Prior to the referee blowing the final whistle for full-time and inciting wild celebrations among their players and hundreds of fans inside the stadium, Saudi had to hold out for about 12 minutes of additional time.
The devastating defeat ends the South Americans’ 36-game winning streak.
