The Senate has summoned Bashi Magashi, Minister of Defence; the service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and Director-General of the Deparment of State Services (DSS) over the rising spate of insecurity in the country.
The Senate made the resolution on Tuesday following a motion moved by Senator Bello Mandiya from Katsina State on the abduction of about 330 students of a secondary school in the state recently by unknown gunmen.
The lawmakers condemned in strong terms the attack on Government Science School, Kankara, Katsina State.
Members of the upper chamber also passed a vote of no confidence in the various heads of security agencies in the country over their inability to prevent the abduction of the innocent children.
They also expressed deep frustration that Buhari had consistently ignore all resolutions passed by the Senate on the issue of insecurity in the country.
Senator Sani Musa (Niger State), who seconded the motion, said: “There is a need for this chamber to draw the attention of Mr. President that enough is enough, these Service Chiefs should go.
“I am being very honest and talking from the heart. Enough of this thing. I wish the National Assembly will take drastic action on this. We have been appropriating; where are these funds going to?”
Senator Gabriel Suswam (Plateau State) criticised the service chiefs and said lawmakers will support the Senate President in whatever resolution decided to address kidnappings and insecurity in the country.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti State) lamented that the Senate has done its best but the executive is not listening and they are becoming helpless. He questioned why President Buhari has refused to remove service chiefs.
“We know the law and we are committed to protecting the constitution of the country. Today, Nigerians need to be told, we have tried our best but nobody seems to be listening to us. What is the problem in removing Service Chiefs?,” Senator Bamidele said.
The senators insisted that President Buhari should sack the security chiefs and replace them with new ones.
They also urged the President to consider and implement the recommendations of the Senate ad-hoc Committee on Nigeria Security Challenges dated March 17th 2020.
