Ndubuisi Emenike, Action Alliance (AA) candidate in the Imo North Senatorial District in the 2019 election, has been shot dead by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The Imo State Police command confirmed the killing on Sunday.
Orlando Ikeokwu, police spokesperson in the state, speaking on the development, told journalists that Emenike was killed an NSCDC official during a celebration party held in honour of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Miriam Onuoha, the winner of the Okigwe North Federal Constituency.

He said the NSCDC operative is said to have been attached to the AA senatorial candidate, and had escorted him to the victory party.
The NSCDC official was shooting sporadically into the air, and mistakenly shot his boss, disrupting the party, which was already underway, Channels Television reports.
It was gathered that Emenike fell and lost consciousness, before he was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Police say the NSCDC official has been taken into custody, saying it has launched an investigation into the incident.
Emenike’s death comes few weeks after the demise of Ben Uwajimogu, who also contested and won the Imo North senatorial district election in 2019.
