Nigerians have started a petition to stop the release of Olanrewaju Omiyinka, a Nollywood actor known as Baba Ijesha.
Reports had said the actor may be released on Friday after a police source told Punch Metro that the actor cannot be detained for long due to the strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN). He also said the assault case against him is statute-barred since the crime was allegedly committed seven years ago.
About 1,200 Nigerians have already signed the petition. The target is for the signees to reach 1,500.
Baba Ijesha was arrested last week after he was reported by the teenager’s foster mother, Princess, a comedienne, that he molested the girl when she was seven years old.
When the actor was apprehended last Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, said there was substantial evidence against the actor as he was caught in the act on Closed Circuit Television.
