Shi’ite sect members and security operatives clashed on Tuesday in Tudun Wada area of Zaria, Kaduna state. An eyewitness told Punch that the sect members were preparing for a protest against the killing of their members and the arrest of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky before the police dispersed the crowd. He also said the members had regrouped at Tudun Nupawa where they engaged the police in a shootout. Three members were said to have lost their lives while many sustained injuries. Another source in the Police Clinic said over five policemen were admitted with various degrees of injuries. The police, however, denied the claims saying the protesters were dispersed using teargas. The Public Relations Officer, Zubairu Abdullahi, said they only repelled an attack on their station in Tudun Wada and had not used guns on anyone.
The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, has met with the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai to assess the situation, which started on Saturday with a clash between the military and the sect.
