The 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian army, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Kwara State, has detained a soldier for allegedly assaulting two female nurses.
Daily Trust reports that the incident occurred on Friday, when the soldier took his pregnant wife to Okelele Primary Health Centre in Ilorin, which also houses Sobi Specialist Hospital, for delivery.
It was gathered that trouble started when one of the nurses asked told him to buy delivery packs after admitting his wife into the labour room.
“Instead of looking for the delivery packs, the soldier rejected the demand arguing that the state government has provided such items for pregnant women that might have come for their delivery at the hospital,” the newspaper quoted a source as saying.
“But the nurse told the soldier that he misconstrued the information, therefore, he needed to provide the delivery packs for his wife to assist her to make use of the delivery packs for his wife’s delivery at the labour room. But, the statement got the soldier angry and beat the nurse to the extent that one of her legs was broken.”
The nurse, who sustained an ankle injury during the incident, is said to be receiving medical attention at the hospital.
Shehu Aminu, chairman of the state chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, who confirmed the assault on the nurses, said the soldier’s wife had been attending antenatal clinic at the hospital.
He stated that after admitting the woman into the labour room, a nurse asked him to go and procure delivery packs, which included hand gloves and other materials to be used for delivery.
Aminu explained that instead of going to purchase the items, the soldier told the nurse that the delivery packs have been provided by the state government.
He added that not satisfied with the nurse’s explanation, the soldier became infuriated and headed to the doctor’s office, where he beat up two nurses he met there.
It was reported that the soldier slapped one of the nurses, while the other sustained ankle injury.
The chairman of the midwives and nurses association in the state further disclosed that the state government reported the incident to the army headquarters in Abuja, which led to the soldier being detained in Ilorin.
The Public Relations Officer of the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigeria Army, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Sergeant Sgt Waziri, noted that said the soldier has been put in the guard room for further interrogation on the matter.
